We recently received the finished copy of Erik Ruin’s beautiful, new ‘zine Little Lives in the mail. Ruin is a U.S. based artist who is part of the Justseeds collective. He visited us in Copenhagen last fall, while in Europe for a Justseeds exhibition.

At that time we were still involved with organizing a printshop/bookstore in Copenhagen’s Vesterbro neighborhood. The shop had two Risograph print machines. The Riso is a soy ink based printer that looks like a regular copy machine but makes beautiful saturated color prints. We were excited to share the print process with Ruin. He made the pages of Little Lives on the Riso with images collected from his sketchbooks. The sketchbook images highlight Ruin’s expressive drawing style and a little bit of his process for creating images.

For the booklet’s center page, Ruin took advantage of the colorful inks, layering red, black and yellow. The Riso is great at layering colors allow the creation of rich, saturated transparencies.

When he returned to the states, he screenprinted a cover and made an edition. The result is below.

We are so happy to have been a small part of this excellent little book. Thanks Erik!
