We snapped this picture at a local bar in our neighborhood on one of our daily walks. The sign says “Ja til øller, Nej til bøller,” which translates as “Yes to beer, No to bullies.” These signs came up after a local controversy about gangs in our neighborhood and the common practice of extorting bar owners for “protection” fees. One barkeep, Jane Brigitte Pedersen at Café Viking, decided to stand up to the young man demanding money. Her bar subsequently had its windows smashed. But many people in the neighborhood and around town came out in support of her decision, throwing a street fest and patronizing the bar. Other bars, like Karrusellen here, put up signs to show their support.
We were impressed with the outpouring of support in the neighborhood.
